Description
Python Pool is a permanent freshwater pool at the base of the Chichester Range escarpment. Follow the 100m trail alongside the usually-dry creek bed.
Toilet and a tree-shaded picnic lie adjacent to the car park.
Several walk variants start from here:
The Cameleers Trail
2.5km - Allow 1.5 hours return
From the Python Pool trail, turn left and head up this
steep trail to the Cameleers Lookout. There are natural
obstacles and the surface is uneven with loose rocks.
Take in the panoramic view before retracing your steps. The Chichester Range Camel Trail continues on from here.
Chichester Range Camel Trail
8km one way - Allow 3 hours (begin at Mount Herbert
and have a vehicle meet you at Python Pool car park)
16km return - Allow 6 hours (begin at Python Pool car park)
This trail is for very experienced bushwalkers and is
best walked between April and September. There is
no shelter from the sun. It includes steep gradients
and natural obstacles including loose rocks.
It links Python Pool with Mount Herbert, following the
old route that was first taken by camel and bullock teams. From here, turn left and head up the steep hill to the Cameleers Lookout. The Chichester Range Camel Trail continues from here, finishing at Mount Herbert. A track to the top of Mount Herbert provides great views.
If walking both ways, it is recommended to begin at
Python Pool. If you are only walking one way, start
at Mount Herbert and have a vehicle meet you at the
Python Pool car park.
