Description

Reef Hills State Park will delight visitors year-round, with wildflowers blooming in spring, wattles flowering in winter and large yellow Guinea-flowers on display most of the year. The park was worked for reef and alluvial gold in the early 1900s and today prospectors may still be lucky enough to find gold particles. The park is located approximately 200km north-east of Melbourne, about 4km from Benalla. It is easily accessible from the Hume and Midland Highways. To reach the parking and picnic area, turn onto Reef Hills Road from the Midland Highway and follow the road until you reach Double Gates Road. A haven for wildlife and native vegetation, Reef Hills State Park is a great spot for picnics, scenic drives, bushwalking, horse-riding, cycling, bird watching and recreational prospecting. In addition, the forest is home to nationally significant flora and fauna including red stringybark, longleaf box and red box, with a grassy understorey and scattered shrubs such as golden wattle and woolly wattle. Dogs and other pets are not permitted in the park, except when travelling through the park in a vehicle.
