Bungaree Station
Point of InterestDescription
Established by George Hawker and his brothers in 1841, Bungaree became the headquarters of an extensive sheep station with 100 thousand merino sheep by the 1880s.
It resembled a small village, with its own Church, Station Store, Blacksmith Shop and even the District Council Chambers , as well as its beautiful sandstone Homestead, Woolshed, Shearers Quarters, Stableyard, Managers House and other staff cottages. Now, 178 years later, it is an efficient mixed farm run by the descendants of the original founder, G.C. Hawker. Consequently Bungaree Station is not a museum, but rather a living record of rural Australia since 1841.
Today visitors can explore the property's rich history or the modern farming enterprise through several tour options.
Self Guided Tours of the Historic Station Complex
A series of audioposts, signs and displays around the village-like property enable small groups and individuals to explore at their own pace. Visit the Station Store, Stableyard, Homestead Gardens, St Michael's Church and Woolshed and learn more about South Australia's pioneering past and insights into the people who lived and worked at Bungaree.
The self guided tour is complimentary for guests staying at Bungaree, but is also available for day visitors at $15 per person (children aged under 12 years free of charge when accompanied by an adult), every day between 10am - 4pm, except when the property is closed for private functions.
Refreshments (including fresh coffee, Clare Valley wines and beers and cheese platters) can be purchased from the Station farm shop.
Room to park your caravan at the entrance near the church. Car parking closer to the station store.
This paid point of interest offers toilets, nice scenery and wildlife viewing. It is dog friendly.
No camping or overnight parking allowed.
