Description

The Outstation in the Aroona Valley, occupied by Eddie Pumpa and his family, is architecturally significant as a good example of large scale pug and pine construction. In addition it is historically important as Sir Hans Heysen spent several weeks there in 1927 within walking distance from some of the finest painting spots in the Flinders Ranges - Brachina Creek and Brachina Gorge. A short climb further up the hills is the site of the station homestead, chosen due to fresh water springs there. The Aroona Valley was run for sheep grazing in the 1850s, and ran up to 10,000 sheep. Only the stone foundation and a partial wall remain. This free point of interest offers nice scenery, wildlife viewing and walking tracks. Dogs are not permitted. No camping or overnight parking allowed.
