BOOKINGS ON WIKICAMPS
Granite Camping Area
CampgroundDescription
All camping in Cape Melville National Park (CYPAL) must be booked in advance. Campers must purchase an e-permit before arriving at the camping areas-self-registration is not available and there is no mobile phone coverage on site.
To obtain an e-permit, you can:
- book online
- visit an over-the-counter camping permit booking office or self service kiosk
- phone 13 QGOV (13 74 68). Mobile phone charges may apply.
Around 4km long, Granite camping area has shady beach-front vegetation and is bounded by a tidal creek and the rocky tip of Cape Melville. Sites are unpowered and unmarked. There are no facilities.
The camping area can be reached by high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle only-it is not accessible for trailers, caravans, campervans or buses. Access involves four-wheel driving in sand, a freshwater creek crossing and several tidal creek crossings. The tidal creek crossing between Oystercatcher and Granite camping areas is extremely difficult and dangerous-take extreme care and do not attempt to cross except on a very low tide. Vehicle recovery equipment is essential. Always travel with another vehicle.
Campers must be equipped for camping in an extremely remote area and be prepared for a longer stay than anticipated in case of breakdown or stranding due to wet weather. Total self-sufficiency in food, water, fuel, vehicle spare parts and recovery equipment is essential. Fresh water is extremely limited so campers should bring adequate drinking water.
Open fires are allowed (except when fire bans apply). Fuel stoves are recommended. Do not collect firewood in the park.
Generators that operate at a noise level less than 65dB(A) when measured at 7m from the generator are permitted.
No pets.
