Chennal Island was once a quarantine station and was used for a leprosy patient in 1885 and for small-pox patients from 1887. CIPS is a natural gas-fired station, with diesel fuel back-up capability.
The Channel Island Reef is significant for its diverse coral. Both the leprosarium and the reefs are Heritage Listed sites.
Saltwater Crocodiles and Box Jellyfish inhabit these waters. Launch and retrieve boats with caution. Carry vinegar in case of Box Jellyfish stings.
